Now It gets quite old school house slash garage slash loft starting with extract from the maestro movie edited back into the original tracks from Master C & J “ Face It “ . He speak at a live gig at paradise garage thanking a bunch of people. History! Master C & J “ When You Hold Me “ was the very first house track I played at the Garage in Montreal. So funny I had no ideas there was a Garage in New York doing similar mixing off all different styles from house to dance to new wave to everything. Contrary to what many thinks, that the “Garage sound” is deep soulful house only is a big misunderstanding because it really stands for diversty and versatily playing all kinds of music surprising people, telling them stories with the music taking them on a journey. That’s really how I always djed and still are. Even back then at the garage in Montreal and other places I played at. It more fun, not to be restricted to just one style. I’m from that school and that’s really what I’m about. I do like doing special sets, like elektro or stricky house etc…
I’m not a purist who only likes minimal or electro or house or tribal. I mix it all up and it’s fun and surprising. Predictability is not interesting for me.
After Master C & J and Liz Torres comes Mr. Finger Classic “ Can You Feel it? “
Again an extract from Maestro that explain how beat matching is not the most important thing about playing music, and I really believe that. Beat matching is fun and can create real uplifting moments, but also using intro’s from songs, or letting them end how they are sometimes is part of creating the mood, which is really the key here.
Creating the feeling from one record to the next, telling a story.
Next the Solu music beautiful piece I discovered because of maestro. Thanks to my brother, who is also quite an expert in the soulful deeper house matter who told me right away what it was.
Looks like I was late on that one, but, it’s really a beautiful timeless piece I’m sure you will enjoy.
At the end of maestro you see Larry Levan in the dj boot with a part of Sylvester, over and over about finding friends and friends, which take me on the “friends” train of song to conclude this journey.
I really worked the original Sylvester version and it was a challenge to put it all in time to be able to match some beats under to fatten it up a little.
Then The Classic “ Gonna find a friend to spend the weekend” wow!
Then with Blaze If you should need a friend.
The next piece is totally new on the friends theme, talking about best friends, by a german outfit called Voom Voom in Charles Webster Dub and vocal mix. Really nice.
Off course to finish it, Robert Owens, I’ll Be Your Friend, until the end, all the time… with a little funny interlude between the 2 mixes taken from the wonderful film by Michel Gondry, the Science Of Dream.
What You hear at the end is Gwen Guthrie at the paradise Garage closing, in parts that I used with and effect to finish the journey.
Have a nice trip!
Robert!
