AN IMPROVISATION PROJECT WITH STUDENTS OF THE "TONEELACADEMIE MAASTRICHT", NETHERLANDS


Jan van Opstalf, teacher at the Academy of Performing Arts in Maatricht, approached Robert De La... Gauthier as advisor for a dance project of one of his classes.
The choreographer Jan van Opstal worked for 6 weeks on a project, based on the 'Viewpoint method'. This is a distinct form of training for actors and dansers in wich they train how to use composition rules in a mouvement-improvisation.
Music is essential for this kind of training/performance. Its is used as an atmosphere or for it's rythm. It can be used in contrast to the actions on stage or it can support it. The cooperation between Robert de la... Gaultier and Jan van Opstal was based on this research. Knowing the music of Robert, Jan got an enormous amount of material of funny, tickling, guiding or pumping music to work with. Although the music was coming from a "club-scene", the result was very theatrical and touching for audience and dansers.
